Williams on form in last home game
Ludlow 29pts Old Saltleians 10.
LUDLOW withstood a battering in the first quarter to round off their home league fixtures with a hard-earned win against Old Saltleians at the Linney.
Ludlow remain in fourth spot in Midlands 3 West North, four points adrift of second-placed Stoke, who lost 15-13 to champions Camp Hill, and two behind Dixonians.
The visitors tore into Ludlow, forcing mistakes, and were quick to move the ball after picking up the loose ball. Fortunately, Ludlow's defence held firm for a while before conceding a penalty.
Old Salts were soon back on the attack and stretched their lead to 10-0 with a converted try. At this point, Ludlow looked to be heading for a big defeat.
Ludlow managed to stem the flow and, when they were able to get their hands on the ball for long enough periods to put pressure on the visitors' defence, they found ample grounds for optimism.
They were back on level terms before the break, with flanker Rob Evans scoring a try after good pressure from the pack. Mark Williams kicked the conversion to add to an earlier penalty.
The second half belonged to the home side who ran in three tries without reply. Dan Rawlings scored the first, then substitute forward Marc Gaubert picked up from the scrum to cross for the second before Williams completed the scoring.
Williams converted two of the three tries to ensure a comfortable win, leaving his side ruing their poor post-Christmas form, which leaves them facing the trip to Staffordshire to take on bottom-side Leek on Saturday, with only pride at stake.
