New footways, crossing, CCTV are planned.

By Sophie Bignall CLEOBURY Mortimer town centre is to receive a massive £400,000 makeover this summer.

The enhancement scheme, funded by Advantage West Midlands and Shropshire County Council, includes new footway paving and a zebra crossing and a number of environmental and pedestrian enhancements.

There will also be grants available for local businesses to refurbish shop fronts.

After extensive local consultation, it was agreed that the zebra crossing would be sited by Brown's Bakery Corner.

Along with helping shoppers to cross the road, the new facilities will provide a safer place for school children to cross and allow Cleobury Primary School to consider an extension of its walking bus scheme.

The scheme also includes new Yorkstone footways, new benches and litter bins, improved facilities at bus stops, better car park signage - and a 20mph zone for the centre of the town.

In line with the scheme, businesses will be able to apply for grants of up to £5,000 towards the cost of shop front improvements.

Later phases will include the installation of a small CCTV system for the town and new lay-bys on the approaches to the town, where visitors will be able to get local information.

County Councillor Adrian Coles said: "I am delighted that these long-awaited improvements will be going ahead and Cleobury Mortimer will benefit from this substantial investment from AWM."

The improvements follow extensive local consultation. A household survey which took place last summer showed a high level of local support for the scheme. Almost half of all households in the town responded, with 90% of the participants supporting an enhancement scheme going ahead.

Works are expected to start in mid-August and will take 14 weeks.
